While working in Alaska earning money to pay for college, Wes learned of the unconscionable human rights violations taking place in Burma and felt compelled to act. He made multiple trips to the refugee camps on the Thailand-Burma border, organizing health exams for more than 1,300 children and teaching healthcare provider classes to more than 70 people from eastern Burma. After Cyclone Nargis caused massive destruction and hardship and killed more than 80,000 people, Wes delivered supplies behind the Burma border to those secretly documenting human rights abuses and the human suffering that occurred in the wake of that disaster. Since 2007, Wes spent more than eight months on the Thailand-Burma border working with Partners Relief and Development. Wes serves with Partners United Kingdom. In January and February of 2009, Wes traveled to the United Kingdom and Jersey Island to tell the story of the Burmese people and advocate for the international community to intervene on their behalf. He spoke at 27 events throughout the United Kingdom and participated in international radio interviews. He met with three members of the British Parliament, including John Bercow, who is now the Speaker of the House of Commons. He presented the People’s Protection Plan, designed to continue community services and provide emergency relief for internally displaced people to the UK’s Department of Foreign and International Affairs and met with the Duke and Dutchess of Norfolk. Wes attended Indiana Wesleyan University and earned a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He also volunteered for three years as an Emergency Medical Technician in Grant County. He currently works full-time as a Neurological Trauma Critical Care Nurse at a Level I Trauma Center in downtown Indianapolis. |
